Foster Moreau got concerning news in March during his visit with the Saints, the veteran tight end was diagnosed with cancer. However, less than a month later, he is ready to resume his career and has signed a contract with the Saints, as reported by Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com on Twitter. The three-year deal is worth $12MM, with an additional $3MM in incentives. This is a remarkable comeback for the former Raiders tight end, who had to take a brief hiatus due to the Hodgkin’s lymphoma diagnosis earlier this year. The contract includes $8MM that is fully guaranteed, according to ESPN.com’s Adam Schefter on Twitter.Moreau was found to have cancer during a routine physical, and had to take a break from football to focus on treatment.
The wonderful news is that Moreau has received clearance and expects to play in 2023. His signing with the Saints will be a homecoming for the former LSU player, having caught the attention of teams during his college career. Moreau will also be reuniting with former teammate, quarterback Derek Carr.
The Saints were in need of a tight end following the trade of former third-round pick, Adam Trautman, and will now have Moreau join Juwan Johnson in their tight end room.
Moreau’s addition to the Saints team comes at a time when the pass-catching positions are mostly being retained from the previous season. The team extended Juwan Johnson and re-signed Michael Thomas, while still expecting Tre’Quan Smith and Rashid Shaheed to make significant contributions. Additionally, the team drafted A.T. Perry and signed ex-Raiders receiver Bryan Edwards.
Moreau is the most significant outside addition the Saints have made to their pass-catching group so far this offseason. His playing time and production will be a welcome addition to the team, particularly given his experience with Carr and the potential impact he’ll have at the tight end position.
The Saints will be hoping that Moreau’s return to football will be as successful as his college and early career, and he will be given ample opportunity to prove himself.
